Myanmar is located in southeastern Asia. Myanmar is the name adopted by Burma in 1989 . At the start of the 19th century, Burma is an independent kingdom. In the course of the 19th century it is colonized by the British, initially ruled as a province of British India. Burma becomes a colony in its own right in 1937. During WWII, Burma is occupied by Japan from 1942. After the war, colonial rule is re-established by the British. Burma gains independence in 1948 as the Union of Burma. Following a coup d’etat in 1962, Burma is subsequently ruled by the military. In the 1970’s Burma becomes a socialist one party state. The autocratic regime, after protests, introduces limited reforms in 1988. In 1989 Burma adopts the name of Myanmar. Democracy is restored in 2010. Although, since 2010, economic reforms have been effected, Myanmar is still very much a developing country. Though Yangon – the former Rangoon – is the largest city in the country, and has been the capital since the 19th century, the capital and administrative center of the country were moved to the city of Nay Pyi Taw in 2005 – a newly built city in the center of Myanmar.

1990 Indigenous people: the Mon

During the colonial era, initially the stamps of British India are used. As of 1937, Burma has issued its own stamps. Myanmar issues stamps as of 1990. A curious stamp is issued in 1995 – inscribed ‘Union of Burma’ rather than ‘Union of Myanmar’.
