Ras al-Khaimah is an emirate on the Arabian peninsula in western Asia. Ras al-Khaimah is, until 1869, and again from 1900 until 1920, part of the neighboring emirate of Sharjah. As part of Sharjah, Ras al-Khaimah, in 1820, becomes a British protectorate as do other emirates in the region, together called the Trucial States. The British interest in the treaties of protection lies in protecting the trades routes to British India, the emirates see an opportunity to protect themselves from Ottoman overlordship.
After the treaty of protection has ended in 1971, the independent Ras al-Khaimah, in 1972, joins the federation of the United Arab Emirates of which it is a part until today. Ras al-Khaimah has no oil resources. It traditionally has an agricultural and fishing sector and has developed an industrial sector in recent decades.

The first post office in Ras al-Khaimah is opened in 1964, which is also the year in which the first stamps are issued. Having joined the United Arab Emirates, Ras al-Khaimah continues to issue stamps until 1972, the stamps of Ras al-Khaimah being superseded by those of the United Arab Emirates in 1973.[1]Ras al-Khaimah became independent on 1 December 1971 and joined the United Arab Emirates in on 11 February 1972. As it is possible, or even likely, that Ras al-Khaima issued stamps in that period, one would, strictly speaking, have to distinguish an extra stamp issuing entity: the independent emirate of Ras al-Khaima. Since the catalogs do not provide information on the exact dates of issue in this period, and the status of the stamps issued is dubious, I have not investigated this any further. [2]The stamps issued by Ras al-Khaimah, from 1965, are disputed. Scott does not list these issues, Stanley Gibbons lists the issues from 1967 in the catalog appendix.
