Political history Turkmenistan
Turkmenistan is located in central Asia. In the 19th century Turkmenistan is fought over by the khanates of Bukhara and Khiva, the emirate of Afghanistan and the Persian Empire, currently Iran. From 1869, Russia joins in the fights and eventually comes out victorious, all of Turkmenistan being part of Russia by 1894. The borders of modern Turkmenistan are formed in 1924 when, within the Soviet Union, the socialist Soviet republic of Turkmenistan is formed. When the Soviet Union breaks up in 1991, the independent republic of Turkmenistan is proclaimed. Turkmenistan is a member of the Commonwealth of Independent States formed after the breakup of the Soviet Union. Half of the Turkmenistan workforce is employed in agriculture – cotton and wheat being the most important crops. Turkmenistan is gradually generating more income from its substantial gas resources, expanding export options – long limited to Russia – by building pipelines to China and Iran.
Postal history Turkmenistan
In Turkmenistan, Russian stamps have been used until 1992, when Turkmenistan has issued its first stamps. A word of caution concerns stamps inscribed Turkmenistan that are not recognized by the Turkmenistan postal authorities. These stamps have appeared since 1997 and cover a wide range of issues mainly aimed at the thematic collector.
