The Federation of South Arabia is located on the Arabian peninsula in western Asia. In 1839, the British have settled in Aden, annexing the port and its direct surroundings as the colony of Aden that is first governed from British India and, from 1937, as a colony in its own right. After settling in Aden, the British have formed, in 1886, the protectorate of Aden through treaties with some 25 emirates in the Aden hinterland. In 1962, most of the emirates in the western part of the protectorate of Aden join to form the Federation of South Arabia. The colony of Aden joins the federation in 1963. The remaining emirates form the protectorate of South Arabia.

The call for independence in both the federation and the protectorate of South Arabia, from 1963, turns into an armed conflict with the British. Independence is gained in 1967, the federation and the protectorate of South Arabia joining to form the peoples republic of Yemen – often called South Yemen. The peoples republic of Yemen, in 1970, becomes the democratic peoples republic of Yemen, and in 1990 joins with the Arab republic of Yemen – often called North Yemen – to form the current republic of Yemen.

1965 – Flag

The colony and protectorate of Aden, until 1937, use the stamps of British India and, from 1937, those of  the colony of Aden. These are superseded by the first issues of the federation of South Arabia in 1963. The emirates in the protectorate of South Arabia issue their own stamps, some of these protectorates have had the right to issue stamps from 1937 – please refer to the country profile of Aden for a more detailed description. The stamps of the federation of South Arabia are, from 1967, superseded by those of South Yemen and, from 1990 by those of Yemen.
