Biafra, located in western Africa, is part of Nigeria. Nigeria gains independence in 1960 to become a federal republic with first three and, from 1963, four constituent regions. The regions reflect the ethnic and religious differences in Nigeria. In the unstable period after independence in 1960, the tensions between the population groups increase. Combined with economic tensions, this is for the Igbo – the main population group in the Eastern region – reason to proclaim independence as the republic of Biafra in 1967. Biafra takes its name from the Bight of Biafra. Federal troops, after an intense three year war, end the existence of the republic of Biafra. Biafra has been recognized only by a limited number of countries. The Biafra war led to the establishment of Médicins sans Frontières[1]Docters Without Borders , a non governmental organization that provides medical assistance in many countries in the world, especially countries in crisis. For its work, Médicins sans Frontières gained the Nobel prize in 1999.
