Sainte Marie de Madagascar[1]Currently called Nosy Sainte-Marie or Nosy Bohara. is an island located off the coast of Madagascar in eastern Africa. Sainte Marie de Madagascar, in the 17th and 18th centuries, is known as a center of piracy. The French, in the 18th century, take an interest in the island – in part to end piracy and in part to establish a port of call on the trade route to India. Sainte Marie de Madagascar is ceded to the French in 1750 as a French colony. Sainte Marie de Madagascar will be administered at times as a separate colony and at times as a dependency of other French possessions in the region – Réunion, Mayotte, Diego-Suarez. In 1898, Sainte Marie de Madagascar is annexed to Madagascar, of which it is a part until today.

1894 – Navigation & Commerce design for the French colonies

From the mid 19th century, the general issues for the French colonies have been used on Sainte Marie de Madagascar. These are, from 1890, superseded by the issues for Diego-Suaraz, of which Sainte Marie de Madagascar had become a dependency. Stamps are issued for Sainte Marie de Madagascar in 1894 – one set of the common Navigation & Commerce design for the French colonies. The stamps of Sainte Marie de Madagascar have been used until 1898, to be superseded by the stamps of Madagascar.
