Inini is located in South America. Inini is the interior of the French colony of French Guiana. Inini was made a separate French territory in 1930. The goal would seem to have been twofold: on the one hand to gain more direct control over the existing economic activities in the region and on the other hand to further development of the region. The region is sparsely populated by Amerindian peoples and the Maroons – descendants of former slaves. The population is estimated to have been 3 000 to 5 000 in 1930. The most important activity in the region was gold mining – officially regulated through concessions, de facto an activity over which the government had lost effective control – which it aimed to regain. The development was to be effectuated through the construction of roads and railroads into the interior, with the aim to attract French colonists to settle in the region. The initiative would seem to have been less than successful as no significant improvements seem to have been made. In 1946, Inini was reintegrated in French Guiana.

Stamps were issued for Inini from 1932. Two large sets of overprints on the stamps of French Guiana were issued, the overprint reading ‘Territoire de l’Inini’. In 1939, two small sets of commemoratives were issued inscribed ‘Inini’. Between 1941 and 1944, stamps were prepared by the Vichy regime in France. As these stamps were never actually put on sale in Inini only the mint specimens are listed in the catalogs. From 1946, the stamps of Inini were superseded by those of French Guiana, those in turn being superseded by the stamps of metropolitan France from 1947.
With an estimated population of 3 000 to 5 000, that was largely illiterate, the stamp production for Inini would seem to have been mainly intended for the collectors market, serving as an extra source of income for the government.
