Sharjah is an emirate on the Arabian peninsula in western Asia. Sharjah, in 1820, becomes a British protectorate, as do other emirates in the region, together called the Trucial States. The British interest in the treaties of protection lies in protecting the trades routes to British India, the emirates see an opportunity to protect themselves from Ottoman overlordship. The emirate of Ras al-Khaimah is, until 1869, and again, from 1900 until 1920, part of Sharjah. Equally, Fujairah is part of Sharjah until 1902. Currently, Sharjah owns a number of exclaves: Dibba al-Hisn, Kalba and Khor Fakkan. A small territory until today is a condominium of Fujairah and Sharjah.
After the treaty of protection has ended in 1971, Sharjah joins the federation of the United Arab Emirates of which it is a part until today. Trade – two free trade zones – and port activities – the city of Sharjah and Khor Fakkan – would seem to be the most important elements in the Sharjah economy.

In 1963, the first post office is opened in Sharjah. Sharjah at the same time issues its first stamps. After joining the United Arab Emirates in 1971, Sharjah continues to issue stamps until the issues of Sharjah are replaced by those of the United Arab Emirates in 1973. From 1965 until 1969, Sharjah has also issued stamps for the exclave of Khor Fakkan, which were valid for use in Khor Fakkan and throughout Sharjah[1]The stamps of Sharjah issued after 1965 and the issues for Khor Fakkan are disputed. Scott does not list them, Stanley Gibbons lists the issues from 1967 in the Appendix.
