Georgia is located in the southern Caucasus in western Asia. In the late 19th and early 20th century Georgia is part of Russia. In the wake of the Russian revolution in 1917, and the civil war that follows, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia in 1918 proclaim independence of Russia as the Transcaucasian Federation. The federation breaks up the same year upon which the republic of Georgia is proclaimed. The southern Caucasus, at the time, is contested between Russia, Turkey and the newly independent states of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia. Borders change frequently. To stabilize the region and to secure the supply of oil, Georgia is put under British protection in 1918 and the important port of Batum^[1]Currently Batumi. is occupied by the British. The British withdraw in 1920 and Batum is transferred to Georgia. Russia invades Georgia in 1921, upon which Georgia becomes a Soviet socialist republic. In the same year, Russia and Turkey agree upon the borders in the southern Caucasus in the treaty of Kars. Georgia cedes part of the Batumi and Ardahan regions to Turkey.

From 1922 until 1936, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia are united in the Transcaucasian Socialist Soviet Republic. Border corrections with Armenia and Azerbaijan are effected in 1931. As the Soviet Union disintegrates in 1991, Georgia proclaims its independence as the republic of Georgia. After independence, a conflict ensues over the regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. With Russian support they achieve de facto independence, their de jure status as being part of Georgia is disputed. The Adjara region becomes self governing as an autonomous republic within Georgia.

In Georgia Russian stamps have been used before the country issues its first stamps as an independent nation in 1919. Most of these are definitives of local design. As of 1922, stamps are issued in the name of the socialist Soviet republic of Georgia. The stamps of Georgia are, in 1923, used concurrently with those of the Transcaucasian federation. All these to be superseded by the stamps of the Soviet Union in 1923. The republic of Georgia has issued stamps as of its independence in 1991. Stamps issued by the disputed regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia are not listed in the worldwide catalogs.
