Tajikistan is located in central Asia. In the 19th century Tajikistan is part of khanate of Bukhara that, in 1868, becomes part of the Russian Empire. The borders of modern Tajikistan are defined in 1924 when, within the Soviet Union, the autonomous socialist Soviet republic of Tajikistan is formed as part of the socialist Soviet republic of Uzbekistan. In 1929, Tajikistan is detached from Uzbekistan and becomes a socialist Soviet republic in its own right. When the Soviet Union breaks up, in 1991, the independent republic of Tajikistan is proclaimed. Tajikistan is a member of the Commonwealth of Independent States formed after the breakup of the Soviet Union. Tajikistan has the least developed economy of former Soviet states in central Asia, relying largely on aluminium and cotton production.

In Tajikistan Russian stamps have been used until 1992, when Tajikistan has issued its first stamps. A word of caution concerns stamps inscribed Tajikistan that are not recognized by the Tajik postal authorities. These stamps have appeared since 1998 and cover a wide range of issues mainly aimed at the thematic collector.
